Research shows women who are cared for by their son’s wife in later life fare less well than those looked after by their own daughter.
研究显示，晚年由媳妇照顾生活的妇女过得日子不如由自己女儿照顾的强。

In fact, the set-up is so unhealthy an elderly woman would be better off living by herself.
更有甚者，单过的年长女性的健康都比媳妇照顾的女性的好。

The Japanese researchers believe the friction in the mother and daughter-in-law relationships is at the heart of their results. The two women traditionally are fighting for the affections of the same man, and years of arguments finally take their toll.
日本的研究人员相信这种结果的产生源于婆媳间的勾心斗角。自古以来，这两个女人就都在争夺同一个男人的注意，日久天长，这样的争斗里总会有一人倒下。

During the four-year study, the scientists tracked almost 200 elderly Japanese men and women, the journal BMC Geriatrics reports.
据老年医学杂志BMC的报告，4年的研究期间科学家们跟踪调查了近200名日本老年男女。

Analysis revealed living with a son and his wife to be highly detrimental to a woman’s health. A woman cared for by her daughter-in-law was twice as likely to have died as one who lived with her daughter.
经过分析数据，他们发现与儿子媳妇共住，对婆婆的健康非常有害。由媳妇照顾的女性死亡率是与女儿同住女性的2倍。

The University of Tsukuba researchers said：’These findings are provocative in that they suggest a survival disadvantage for women who are cared for by their daughters-in-law, that is a daughter-in-law"penalty".’
筑波大学的研究人员认为：这项发现很容易引起争议，因为这暗示说跟儿媳同住的女性死亡率高，这是一种媳妇的“惩罚”。

既然是日本的研究结果，跟英国社会的情况符合不符合是很难说，跟中国应该就差不离了，都是汉文化圈嘛。这么说来，为了自己的健康长寿，婆婆们还是不要跟儿子同住吧……距离不仅能产生美，还能长寿哦。
